Hens, Pizza and Some Bread!

One of our school annual projects is working crosscurricular in our EFL/ ESL classes.

So, these are some of the activities we did at school while reading The Little Red Hen
We ..
  • made predictions. The kids looked at the cover of the book and told what they think the story would be about.
  • went on a picture walk through the book.  We didn't read the text, just looked at each picture and told what they thought is happening in each picture.
  • cololored the cover of our folder.
  • talked about manners. On a posterboard I printed  "Manner Words" like Please, Thank you, Your welcome... Then the kids  decorated the signs with glitter, markers, stickers...
  • made some bread using this recipe. We ate some and took the rest home.
  • had items used by a baker: cookie cutters, measuring cup, measuring spoon, rolling pin, spatula, etc. in the box and kids had to guess what it was without looking.
  • graphed our favorite bread
  • read different versions of the story andcompared them.
  • used the vocabulary cards to review and practice vocabulary
  • used the necklace to recalled the events of the story.
  • sorted the words by beginning sounds, syllables, short or long words
  • made puppets with craft sticks to sequence events
  • cut out people in magazines who were using there manners, ex- a man opening a car door, or a restaurant door, children sitting properly at a table home/restaurant, etc. weglued it to construction paper and we hang it at our classroom to remind us of good manners.
  • learned a poem
I have super manners!
I have super manners. Yes, I do.
I can say "Please," and "Thank You," too.
When I play with friends, I like to share.
That's the way I show I care!

  • learned a song about manners
If you have super manners!
This is sung to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It"

If you have super manners and you know it just say please,
If you have super manners and you know it just say please,
If you have super mannersand you know it then don't be afraid to show it,
If you have super manners and you know it just say please.
If you have super manners and you know it say thank you,
If you have super manners and you know it say thank you,
If you have super manners and you know it, Then don't be afraid to show it,
If you have super manners and you know it say thank you.

You can add verses using you're welcome, yes mam, yes sir, excuse me, etc
