Apples, Dwarves and a Horrible Witch

One of our school annual projects is working crosscurricular in our EFL/ ESL classes.

So, these are some of the activities we did at school while reading Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

We ..
  • made predictions. The kids looked at the cover of the book and told what they think the story would be about.
  • went on a picture walk through the book.  We didn't read the text, just looked at each picture and told what they thought is happening in each picture.
  • cololored the cover of our folder.
  • learned that A is for apples, D is for dwarves. Kids cut and pasted pictures from magazines and sorted them. D /A
  • discussed apples, how they grow, identified different types of apples and how they could be used to make other things.
  • made some apple sauce
peel 15 small or 8 large apples. Cut up and place in crock-pot. Add 1 ¼ cups water, cinnamon and ¾ cup sugar (optional). Cook on low for 5 hours, or until soft..
  • tasted different apples and graphed them
  • read different versions of the story
  • learnt about some irregular plural forms such as dwarf/dwarves
  • used the vocabulary cards to review and practice vocabulary
  • sorted the words by beginning sounds, syllables, short or long words
  • used the necklace to recall the events of the story.
  • stamped apples with red, yellow and green paint
  • estimated how many apples there were in a basket / how many seeds there were in an apple
  • made witches hats
  • made puppets with craft sticks to sequence events
  • learnt a chant
I'm a witch
Boom! Boom! (clap, clap)
I'm a witch
Boom! Boom! (clap, clap)
With a pointed hat on my head.... (hands point over head...forming a hat)
I jump on my broom (pretend to jump on broomstick)
And I sweep the sky (sweeping motion)
While children are in bed (head resting on hands)

  • made apple scented playdough
  • learnt a new song
Two Little Apples
Tune to "This Old Man"
Way up high, in a tree
(raise hands over head)
Two red apples smiled at me
So I shook that tree as har-r-d as I could
(Pretend to shake tree)
Down came the apples, Ummm, they were good!!!!
(Rub tummy)
