Muffins, Milk and Moose!

My kids love Laura Numeroff stories. One of our school annual projects is working crosscurricular in our EFL/ ESL classes.

So, these are some of the activities we did at school while reading If You Give a Moose a Muffin

We ..

  • made predictions. The kids looked at the cover of the book and told what they think the story would be about.
  • went on a picture walk through the book. We didn't read the text, just looked at each picture and told what they thought is happening in each picture.
  • cololored the cover of our folder
  • gave the children an outline of a moose on heavy paper. Provide children with art supplies to make a collage.
  • learned that M is for moose, muffins and milk, kids cut and pasted pictures from magazines that began with M
  • made some muffins using this recipe. We ate some and took the rest home
  • tasted muffins and graphed our favorite
  • read about Laura Numeroff
  • looked for information about mooses, then we compared real mice and fictional moose
  • used the necklace to recalled the events of the story
  • made moose antlers
  • made puppets with craft sticks to sequence events
  • finished the sentence If you give a moose a _____, he will ...
  • used the vocabulary cards to review and practice vocabulary
  • made puppets using socks. After making the puppets, let each child on their moose antlers and put on a puppet show.  You can use two or three file folders stapled together to create a l_l for them to get behind.  Set the l_l on a table.
  • compared If you give a moose a muffin and If you give a mouse a cookie
  • sorted the words by beginning sounds, syllables, short or long words
  • learnt a poem
Five Sleepy Moose
Five sleepy moose on a great big hill.
The first one said, "I like lying still."
The second one said, "I'm about to yawn!"
The third one said, "Please don't wake
me until dawn."
The fourth one said, "My eyes are
starting to close."
The fifth one said, "It's time for a doze."
So they pulled up their covers,
And all said, "Goodnight!"
Then the five sleepy moose were out
like a light.
