Make Mother's Day Special with These ESL Activities!



What is Mother's Day, and why is it celebrated?

Mother's Day is a holiday that celebrates mothers and motherhood. It is typically celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mother's Day is a relatively new holiday, first being celebrated in the early 20th century. The holiday is thought to have originated from a day set aside to honor mothers in ancient Greece. It has since become a day to celebrate mothers in many cultures around the world. 

Mother's Day is a day to show appreciation for all that mothers do for their children. It is a day to give gifts, send cards, and make special gestures to let mothers know how loved and appreciated they are.


When it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day in the ESL classroom, there are a number of fun and meaningful activities that you can do with your students.



Here are just a few ideas to get you started: 

Have students write Mother’s Day cards in English. This is a great way for them to practice their writing skills, and it’s a nice gesture for the mothers in your students’ lives. 

Put together a Mother’s Day photo collage. This can be a fun group activity, and it’s a great way for students to share photos of their mothers (or other important women in their lives)

  • Students can share what they are doing for mother's day with the class.
  • Make cards with construction paper and crayons.
  • Have students write poems or letters to their mothers.
  • Make a collage with pictures of mothers and students.
  • Make a mother's day themed word search.
  • Have a discussion about what students' mothers do for them and why they are important.
  • Make a countries of the world themed Mother's Day card.
  • Make a 3D paper flower Mother's Day card.
  • Have a potluck and have each student bring in a food dish that is special to their mother or culture.
  • Hold a Mother's Day bake sale and donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice.
